A leader is defined as "the person who leads or commands a group," while a boss is defined as " a person who is in charge." What's the difference? One has earned respect through action whilst the other has earned the respect from their title.
There are many traits that good leaders can have and actions they can take. Here are just a few of the traits and expectations that leaders at Phenix live up to every day:
One of our core values is to be humble, be curious, and be courageous. This is a core value that every member of the Phenix Family emulates and is not exclusive to leadership. How can leaders be humble, curious, and courageous?
Phenix truly believes that it is our mission to leave the world a better place. The most effective way to do that is through the development of our people. Leaders of every department meet with their team members regularly and consistently to not only give feedback but also receive feedback. Each member of the Phenix family has clearly defined key performance indicators that give them a pulse on how they are performing.
The best part of these regular meetings is not the feedback but the thoughtful development of each member of the Phenix family. Development at Phenix focuses on three key things: interest, strengths, and trajectory.
We want to develop our family to be able to pursue their interests and are able to support this through on the job training, shadowing and cross training in other functions, 1-on-1 mentoring within Phenix and other organizations, and more.
Additionally, leaders are trained to notice talent. Many of our Phenix family members are performing job functions that they may have not initially been hired for. Why? Because we saw the potential and made sure that those members of the Phenix family got the training they needed to build on strengths they are already exhibiting.
Finally, Phenix focuses on trajectory. As we have stated many times, our purpose as a business is to leave the world a better place and that mission starts with people. We want everyone who comes to work with us to leave with new skills that will catapult them to success no matter where they choose to go.
Don't take our word for it. We asked some members of the Phenix Family about what leadership was to them, and this was what they had to say about just a couple of leaders at our organization.
